Contained within a bell jar, an object used in Victorian England to display deceased specimens, Dominic Harris’ three-dimensional holographic butterflies are full of life, continuously fluttering around their enclosure and responding to the viewer’s presence.
These butterflies are meticulously created through layers of digital paint, applied by hand, to represent three species found in Asia, namely: the Eastern Orange Albatross, the Common Yeoman and the Chocolate Albatross. Employing the “Pepper’s Ghost” hologram technique, Harris imbues his butterfly subjects with an ethereal, eternal life.
